Environmental and Social
The Dutch government promotes responsible business conduct in international trade. Within this framework, Atradius DSB’s environmental and social policy guides a thorough assessment of transactions.
Export Insurance in a World of Scarcity and Transition
International trade is evolving at a time in which climate change, resource scarcity and human rights are increasingly shaping economic decision-making. Projects in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and agriculture contribute to development and international competitiveness, but may be implemented in settings with heightened environmental and social sensitivities.
Sustainable export and responsible business conduct start with the exporter. Companies using export credit insurance are expected to identify, prevent and mitigate negative environmental and social risks. As part of this process, exporters acknowledge the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and commit to complying with them.
Our E&S team develops and applies the assessment framework at national and international level, combining international standards, sector-specific expertise and hands-on transaction experience. The environmental and social policy provides the basis for our due diligence.
Our E&S policy sets out how we assess environmental and social risks in projects. It enables us to identify key risks and considerations by taking into account sector-specific characteristics, geographical conditions, the nature and scale of activities and relevant long-term developments.
The assessment process aligns with international frameworks such as the OECD Common Approaches, IFC Performance Standards, and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
At the core of the E&S policy is a risk-based approach. The greater the potential impact of a project, the more in-depth the analysis. The E&S team assesses, among other things:
- How environmental and social risks are managed
- The impact on biodiversity and natural resources
- Working conditions and other social risks, including resettlement,
- Impacts on local communities
- Climate-related impacts and energy intensity

Human rights are an integral part of the environmental and social due diligence process. The Human Rights Policy Statement is based on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and recognizes companies’ responsibility to respect human rights and to identify, prevent and address potential adverse impacts.

Animal welfare forms part of the environmental and social due diligence process in sectors where this is relevant. The Animal Welfare Policy Statement aligns with internationally recognized standards, including the guidelines of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), and is guided by the Five Freedoms of animals.
The policy statement includes exclusion criteria for activities that are not in line with these principles.
