History

The Nederlandsche Credietverzekeringsmaatschappij, NCM, is the legal predecessor of Atradius. They began insuring credit on Amsterdam's Keizersgracht in 1925. The premise was to promote trade for businesses in the Netherlands. Not long after, in 1932, the NCM signed a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Finance to reinsure export credits. The Netherlands' official export credit insurer merged into Atradius Dutch State Business. This move was of great importance to the Dutch economy, as it allowed Dutch companies to insure their exports to enter new markets. After World War II, NCM played an important role in rebuilding the Dutch economy by encouraging the export of Dutch products. The Atradius Group expanded through mergers and acquisitions and became an international player with offices in more than 50 countries.

Atradius Dutch State Business
Who are we?

Atradius Dutch State Business is part of the Atradius Group, one of the largest credit insurers in the world. We work on behalf of the Dutch government and, because of our public character, are operationally separate from Atradius. The Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs have policy responsibility for the ECI instruments we offer. All premiums, claims payments and collection proceeds are for the account and risk of the Dutch State. For our work as executor, we receive a fixed annual fee from the state.

Atradius Dutch State Business employs 75 specialists, divided into six teams: Economic Research Department (ERD), Key Accounts & Project Finance (KA & PF), SME's & Business Development (SME & BD), Claims & Legal (C&L), Strategy & International Relations (S&IR) and IT, Control & Compliance (ITC&C).

Enabling trade, creating impact
What do we do?

As the official export credit insurer of the Netherlands, we offer a wide range of insurance and financing that promote export and trade. Dutch exporters and their banks and investors can be protected against commercial and political risks, allowing them to do business abroad and enter unfamiliar markets with confidence. Our coverage facilitates both public and private (export) financing, stimulating trade, employment and innovation in the Netherlands and abroad, mostly in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Sectors that are most helped by ECI instruments are maritime, technology, medical, mechanical engineering, hydraulic engineering and management and agri-food.

Atradius DSB and the government
Why?

It is important for the Dutch manufacturing industry to be able to offer financing to customers on competitive terms. Simply supplying a good product is not enough to compete internationally. Customers look at quality, but also at price and financing. Banks play a major role here. So do credit insurers. If commercial insurers do not provide coverage, the government steps in. On behalf of the Dutch state, Atradius DSB offers export credit insurance. In practice, credit insurance turns out to be very suitable to support Dutch exporters. But why doesn't a private insurer cover? It often involves transactions with a long manufacturing time or credit period. For private credit insurers, the risks are then sometimes too high. Moreover, the government is in a better position than the market to recover its money. For example, because it has more (diplomatic) resources to recover damages.

For which transactions is it possible to apply for insurance?

The basic principle is that the export credit insurance facility should not distort the market. Therefore, for risks that can be covered by a commercial insurer, public export credit insurance will in principle not be possible. Periodically, the state determines which risks (countries, duration and size of the transaction) are not commercially insurable and thus may qualify for public export credit insurance. This delineation of the state's insurance activities, can be found below.

Exporters, banks and investors
Our partners

We support Dutch exporters of capital goods, internationally operating contracting companies, banks and investors with their export transactions and activities abroad. Our insurance and financing solutions are diverse and offer solutions for both small and large companies in various sectors. We cannot do this alone. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports Dutch business at home and abroad with financing and trade missions. The ecosystem of Dutch trade promotion consists of public and private organizations. We work closely with ministries, embassies, Netherlands Business Support Offices (NSBOs), Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO), Invest International and international and local banks. We also work regularly with industry organizations such as Evofenedex, FME, VNO-NCW, Mkb-Nederland and NWP. We are a member of the Network for International Entrepreneurship ( NIO).
